Maya Ubud Resort And Spa
Ever since the German artist Walter Spies arrived here in 1928, UBUD has been a
magnet for any tourist with the slightest curiosity about Balinese arts. The people of
Ubud and adjacent villages really do still paint, carve, dance and make music, and
hardly a day goes by without there being some kind of festival in the area. However,
although it's fashionable to characterize Ubud as the real Bali, especially in contrast
with Kuta, it actually bears little resemblance to a typical Balinese village.
Cappuccino cafés, riverside losmen and woodcarving shops crowd its central marketplace
and, during peak season, foreigners seem to far outnumber local residents. There is
major (mostly tasteful) development along the central Monkey Forest Road (now officially
renamed Jalan Wanara Wana), and the peripheries of the village have merged so completely
into its neighbouring hamlets that Ubud now covers some nine square kilometres,
encompassing Campuhan, Penestanan, Nyuhkuning, Peliatan, Pengosekan and Padang Tegal.

includes crab fishcakes, duck roasted in Balinese spices, and pomfret fillet with
jackfruit. Shuts at 1am.
Bali Buddha , opposite the GPO on Jl Jembawan. Comfortable chairs, delicious juices,
filled bagels, tasty cakes and sandwiches. Also a notice board detailing yoga and
language courses.
Bamboo Restaurant , Jl Dewi Sita, central Ubud. Inexpensive and authentic Indonesian
dishes, with recommended seafood and interesting veggie options.
Bumbu , Jl Suweta, central Ubud. Delicious Indian and Balinese fare such as banana

water-garden setting. Mid-priced.
Café Lotus , Jl Raya, central Ubud. Long-established Ubud landmark which overcharges
for its rather average food, but has a great setting overlooking the Pura Saraswati
lotus pond.
Café Wayan , Monkey Forest Road. Good menu of Thai and Indonesian dishes, and
scrumptious cakes to eat in and take away.
Casa Luna , Jl Raya, central Ubud. Stylish riverside place specializing in
mouthwatering breads and cakes, but also offering great salads, Indonesian and Indian
fare. Nightly videos.
Kubuku , southeast of the bottom end of Monkey Forest Rd, central Ubud. Ubud's most
laid-back café stands on the edge of the rice fields and serves a limited but delicious
vegetarian menu. The perfect place to chill out for an hour or two.
Murni's Warung , Jl Raya, Campuhan. High-class, mid-priced curries, thick home-made
soups and Indonesian specialities in a relaxed restaurant built into the side of the Wos
River valley.

Balinese food, including fish and rice cooked in banana leaves.
Sanak Rumah Makan Padang , Jl Hanoman, central Ubud. Inexpensive and authentic
Sumatran fare, including fried chicken, baked eggs, potato cakes and fish curry.
Tutmak , Jl Dewi Sita. Wholesome mid-priced menu that includes meat, fish and
vegetarian nasi campur, delicious breads and cakes, espressos and cappuccinos. Board
games and newspapers.
Warung Ketut (Shadana) Vegetarian Café , Jl Raya, central Ubud. Tiny, inexpensive
place, which serves the most imaginative Indonesian veggie food in Ubud. Shuts about
8pm.
