Although Kobe has almost totally recovered from the 1995 earthquake , it has far from
forgotten this horrific event; one of the city's most interesting new
"attractions" is the Kobe Phoenix Plaza , which documents the quake and its
aftermath. The nearby Kobe City Museum , covering the port's earlier illustrious
history, is also worth a look, as is the space-age Fashion Museum on the man-made Rokko
Island, east of the city harbour.
Heading into hills, you can relax at Arima Onsen , one of Japan's oldest spa resorts.
West of the city is the Akashi Kaikyo Ohashi , the longest suspension bridge in the
world , linking Kansai directly with Shikoku via Awaji-shima. Continue some 55km further
west along the coast and you'll arrive at Himeji , home of Japan's best original castle
Himeji-jo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.
Court Lodge , 1-23-16 Kitano-cho. Next door to Tanto Piatto , this Sri Lankan
restaurant serves rich coconut-milk-flavoured curries, best eaten with godamba bread.
The set lunches are the best deal, at around ¥1000. Daily 11am-10pm.
Gaylord , 7F Bacchus Building, 1-26-1 Nakayamate-dori. There's a good view over the
city from the window seats at Kobe's best Indian restaurant. The curries are on the mild
side, but very filling - one dinner course (from ¥2500) is enough for two unless you're
ravenous; lunch courses start at a reasonable ¥1000. The classy jazz club Satin Doll is
on the second floor of the same building. Mon-Fri 11.30am-3pm & 5.30-10pm, Sat &
Sun 11.30am-3pm & 5-10pm.
Hard Rock Café , 1-3-3 Higashi-Kawasaki-cho. Located in the HarborCircus complex in
Harbor Land, Japan's latest Hard Rock is exactly as you'd expect - large burgers and
lots of rock memorabilia. The Mt Fuji burger does at least add a little local flavour to
the menu. Mon-Thurs & Sun 11am-11pm, Fri & Sat 11am-3am.
Indo Time , B1F Sun Plaza Building, 1-8-1 Sannomiya-cho. Kansai's only Indian
"fastfood" restaurant, located in a busy underground dining mall and run by
the half-Indian, half-Japanese Sushil Dhawan. Cheap, cheerful and tasty, and
correspondingly popular with Kobe's younger crowd - a meal here (including a drink)
comes in at well under ¥1000. Daily except Wed 10.30am-7.30pm.
Marrakech , 1-20-15 Nakayamate-dori. This long-running Morrocan restaurant, in a
basement a couple of blocks east of Kitano-zaka, is not cheap, but it's authentic and
serves true North African food, including tajine stews and couscous. Tues-Fri 5-11pm,
Sat & Sun noon-2pm & 5-11pm.
Misono , 3-3-19 Ikuta-cho. Photos of customers decorate the walls of this convivial
izakaya , on the way up to Shin-Kobe Station to the east of Flower Road, specializing in
okonomiyaki pancakes and serving a wide range of other Japanese dishes at inexpensive
prices. Also good for a beer and late-night dining. Mon-Sat 11am-2pm & 6pm-1am.
Nailey's Cafe , 2-8-12 Kanoo-cho (tel 078/231-2008). Trendy bar/café with a simple
but tasty menu - the ¥1000 lunches include soup, salad and coffee in addition to the
main course, and the open front is nice to sit in during the summer. Internet service
also available. Daily 11.30am-midnight.
The Old England , 1-13-7 Nakayamate-dori (tel 078/392-7033). Quiet, authentic
British-themed bar/restaurant with a range of draught beers and an extensive selection
of malt whiskies. Haggis and steak and kidney pie (¥800 each) are among the menu's
delights. Watch out for the ten percent service charge, though. Mon-Sat 5pm-3am, Sun
5pm-midnight.
Shooby Dooby Café , 3-12-3 Kitanagasa-dori. Trendy diner, attracting Kobe's stylish
youth, with colourful leather banquette seats and a counter bar. Serves Western snack
dishes, such as sandwiches and pizza. The ¥1000 set lunch includes a beer and salad.
Daily 11.30am-10.30pm.
Tanto Piatto , 1-23-16 Kitano-cho. Tasty pasta and other Italian dishes in a stylish,
contemporary restaurant with an open kitchen. Lunch specials are a great deal. Daily
except Mon 11.30am-10pm.
Yum Jamu , 3F Hirose Building, 3-2-17 Kitanagasa-dori. Eclectic Oriental restaurant
and good veggie choice, using organic and additive-free produce.
