Holiday Inn Kochi
Hotel Nikko Kochi Asahi Royal
The castle is still the highlight of any visit to Kochi. To see anything else of
interest requires a short journey out of the city centre. The most immediately rewarding
trip is to Godai-san-koen , a mountain-top park overlooking the city, and the nearby
Chikurin-ji , the 31st temple on the pilgrimage circuit. South of the city lies
Katsurahama, with its celebrated beach and Tosa fighting dogs, though in fact the most
interesting attraction here is the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum , dedicated to a local
hero of the Meiji Restoration.
Kochi-ken is predominantly rural, and the people here are refreshingly down-to-earth,
something you'll discover if you time your visit to coincide with a
three-hundred-year-old institution, the weekly Sunday market on Kochi's Otesuji-dori
when farmers from all over the prefecture bring their produce to town. Even so, the
capital is no hick town. On the contrary, Kochi has a distinctly cosmopolitan feel, with
its wide, palm-lined avenues, network of rivers and shopping arcades, and gently
trundling trams. Also it's well worth attending the Yosokoi Matsuri , Kochi's O-bon
festival - with 14,000 plus dancers, it might not be as big as Tokushima's Awa Odori,
which it immediately precedes from August 9-12, but it's just as colourful.
Baffone , 1-2-10 Yanagimachi. At the Harimaya-bashi end of Kochi's famous drinking
street, you can watch the drunken revellers pass by from this continental-style café's
outdoor tables. The daily menu is a mixture of French and Italian styles. Around ¥2500
per head.
Beans Deli , Harimaya-machi. Good for light lunch or snack, this modern café facing
onto a pleasant promenade boasts "the best homemade sandwiches and coffee in
town".
Hakobe , Obiya-machi Arcade. The place for okonomiyaki and yakisoba . You cook up the
dish yourself at the hotplate on your table. Difficult to spend over ¥1000. Closed Wed.
Hirome Ichiba , at the end of the Obiya-machi Arcade. Lively market of stalls selling
a range of Japanese food and cheap beer; you're almost always guaranteed to find one of
the local expat community here. Also has a good Chinese food stall.
Jacaranda , Obisan-dori. Small, second-floor restaurant serving set menus of
Southeast Asian cuisine. Attention to detail means you pay a little more (around ¥1500)
but it's certainly worth it. In the evening, try the nearby garlic restaurant Ninnikuya
. Only open for lunch 11.30am-3pm; closed Sun.
Jungri-la , Densha-dori. Above the corner pachinko parlour, this pub/restaurant has
palms and vines which sprout up and around the large dining space, built around a fake
waterfall. The standard izakaya food is a lot less adventurous, but they do serve
alligator and have Guinness on tap.
Mamma Italia , Nijudai-cho. Opposite the Manhattan Hotel , this stylish Italian is
run by an English-speaking chef, who learned his craft in Rome. The speciality is pizza
baked in a wood-fired oven. Around ¥2500 a head. Closed Wed.
Mephistopheles . Opposite the west end of Obisan-dori. Dark, comfy and convivial,
this café serves a wide range of coffees and set-meal menus from as little as ¥650.
Occasionally has live music, including jazz. Faust , next to Jacaranda , is run by the
same company and very similar. Daily 7am-9.30pm.
Tosahan , Obiya-machi Arcade. The place to go to savour Tosa ryori , the local
speciality fish cuisine.
