Nagasaki's principal sights are widely spread, starting in the north with the Peace
Park and the gruelling but informative Atomic Bomb Museum . From there it's a tram ride
down to Nagasaki Station and a gentle stroll along the slopes of Nishizaka from the 26
Martyrs' Memorial round to Nagasaki's most imposing shrine, Suwa-jinja. The focus of
interest in the central district is a row of quiet temples , notably Sofuku-ji, founded
by the city's Chinese community, while Chinatown itself consists of a colourful, compact
grid of streets. Slightly further west, the former Dutch enclave of Dejima is
commemorated with a museum and scale model of the old settlement.
Down in the far south, several European houses have been preserved on the former
hilltop concession, now known as Glover Garden , overlooking Nagasaki's magnificent
harbour and a colourful Confucian shrine. To round it all off, take a twilight ropeway
ride up to the top of Inasa-yama before hitting the bars and clubs of Shianbashi.
There's more than enough here to fill two days; if you've only got one to spare, it's
probably best to skip the sights along Nishizaka and head straight for Sofuku-ji or
Glover Garden.
Bharata , Street Yasaka Building, 2-10 Aburaya-machi. It's worth tracking down this
little homely Indian for its excellent-value sets. There's a limited range of curries,
including vegetarian, tandoori dishes and thali. Not haute cuisine, but the food is
spicy and plentiful. Tues-Sun 11.30am-3pm & 5-10pm.
Hamakatsu , 1-14 Kajiya-machi. Popular restaurant on Teramachi-dori specializing in
tonkatsu (pork cutlets). Though it looks smart, with its gold signboard and iron
lantern, prices are extremely reasonable and you can eat all you want of the extras -
soup, rice and salad. Daily 11.30am-10pm.
Hamakatsu , 6-50 Kajiya-machi (tel 095/826-8321). This smarter Hamakatsu offers
shippoku meals at reasonable prices. You can try a mini- shippoku at around ¥3000 or
the real thing from ¥4000 up to ¥15,000 per person; note that you must order in
advance and they require at least two people per group. Daily 11.30am-10pm.
Harbin , 2-27 Kozen-machi (tel 095/822-7443). On the main road west of City Hall,
this Nagasaki institution has been serving French and Russian cuisine since 1959. It's
nicely decked out with dark wooden furniture and an impressive array of vodkas. There's
plenty of choice, from borsch to Azerbaijan-style pot au feu , and good lunchtime sets
for ¥1500. Tues-Sun 11.30am-2.30pm & 6-10.30pm.
Kagetsu , 2-1 Maruyama-machi (tel 095/822-0191). Even more famous than Harbin,
Kagetsu started life as a brothel, but in the early twentieth century began cooking
top-notch Nagasaki cuisine. On the corner of an attractive square and surrounded by a
traditional garden, this is the best place for shippoku . Prices start at ¥4550 for a
lunchtime bento or ¥8000 for the regular set; expect to pay at least double that in the
evening. Booking is essential and you need two people or more. Daily noon-3pm &
5-10pm.
Kouzanrou , 12-2 Shinchi-machi. Chinatown is packed with tempting restaurants, but
this Fukien establishment is recommended for its reasonably priced chanpon and sara udon
as well as more mainstream Chinese dishes. Daily 11.30am-9.30pm.
Ringer Hut . Towards the south end of Teramachi-dori, this basic, reliable
café-style restaurant belongs to another Kyushu chain. The extensive menu includes
chanpon sets from ¥600. Daily 11am-4am.
Robin Hood no Mori , 4F, 5-8 Motoshikkui-machi. Look for their small Robin Hood logo
just as you walk south into Shianbashi, and make sure you're hungry enough to appreciate
their eat-and-drink-all-you-want deals (from ¥2100). Men pay slightly more than women,
there's a two-hour time period and everyone in the group must choose the same type of
menu. Shabu-shabu , barbecue-beef and seafood are the main options, though there's also
a salad bar. It's a bit of a scrum at peak times, when you'll have to queue. Daily
5-10.30pm, Fri & Sat till midnight.
Shirokiya , 9-28 Daikoku-machi.
