Hotel Nikko Naha Grand Castle
Central Naha is bordered to the south by the Kokuba-gawa which flows into Naha Port,
and to the west by Highway 58. About 500m north of the river, Kokusai-dori cuts
northeast from the highway, past the Palette Kumoji department store and Prefectural
Assembly Hall. The city's main thoroughfare, nearly 2km long, it's lined with a strange
mix of classy boutiques, souvenir stalls and army-surplus outlets. Follow the road
northeast and it eventually leads uphill to Shuri-jo , where the castle's vivid palaces
lie hidden behind stout walls. Alternatively, head east from Kokusai-dori through the
backstreets to the Tsuboya district. Famous for its pottery kilns, Tsuboya is a
pleasing, compact area of little workshops and dusty galleries.
Anapa , Banyan Town, Onoyama. Part of the colourful complex of fast-food restaurants
beside the Kokuba-gawa, and housed inside a towering fake banyan tree twinkling with
fairy lights at night. Serves decent Southeast Asian cuisine and is best visited for
lunch when it does a couple of set menus for ¥800 that are tasty and well presented.
Bindochu , BI Koramu Biru, 1-4-1 Matsuo, Kokusai-dori. Cheap and central, this is one
of the best places to sample Okinawan cuisine. The basement is cosy and rustic. Set
meals go for ¥1000 and they also do their own awamori ice cream. Daily 11.30am-11.30pm.
Capricciosa , 3-11-22 Kumoji. The popular Italian chain has been an instant success
in Naha. Prices look expensive, but most dishes are enough for two. Daily 11am-10.30pm.
Dai-ichi Kosetsu Ichiba . Small atmospheric restaurants tucked away above the food
market off Ichiba-dori. Choose from the menu or hunt around in the market downstairs for
the fish of your liking which will then be prepared and sent upstairs for you to eat. If
you're a sashimi fan, the prices are reasonable and the fish doesn't come much fresher.
Daily 10am-8pm.
Mino-ya , 9F, Palette Kumoji, 1-1-1 Kumoji. Café-style restaurant that's low on
atmosphere but serves well-rated local cuisine at a good price. Try their Minoya soba ,
or one of the chanpuru dishes.
Naha Soba , Highway 331, Onoyama. No prizes for guessing the house speciality at this
rustic noodle house near the International Youth Hostel. Naha soba is laced with pork,
ginger and spring onion, and they also offer a variety of reasonably priced set meals.
From the hostel turning, walk south along the highway, then turn left just before the
footbridge. Daily 10am-9.30pm.
Spicy Kitchen , Sakurazaka-dori, Makishi 3-chome. Look out for the chilli-pepper
mural on this cheery Indian restaurant up a lane near the east end of Heiwa-dori. The
simple menu includes chicken, mutton and seafood curries from ¥1200, plus a range of
vegetarian dishes and a good lunch deal for ¥800. Daily noon-4pm & 6-9.30pm.
Suimui , Suimuikan, Shuri-jo. Surprisingly good garden-view restaurant in the
Shuri-jo information centre , serving Okinawa dishes as well as mainstream Japanese and
Western meals. Not to be confused with the noisy snack bar. Daily 9am-4.30pm.
