Nara Hotel
More a large town than a city, Nara is an enjoyable place to explore. There are
plentiful English-language signs, the grid street system makes for easy navigation, and
the main sights are all gathered on the city's eastern edge in the green expanse of
Nara-koen . The most important temples are Kofuku-ji and Todai-ji . Along the eatern
hills you'll find a sprinkling of second-tier sights, including Nara's holiest shrine,
Kasuga Taisha , and splendid displays of Buddhist statuary in two historic temples,
Sangatsu-do and Shin-Yakushi-ji . With an extra hour or two to spare, it's worth
wandering the streets of southerly Nara-machi , a traditional merchants' quarter where
some attractive old shophouses have been converted into museums and craft shops.
Asuka , 1 Shonami-cho. A sleek tempura restaurant in the attractive Nara-machi
district. At lunchtime you can feast on their beautifully presented bento (¥1600), or
menus from around ¥2000. Daily except Wed 11.30am-2.30pm & 5-9.30pm.
Beni-e , Higashimuki-dori. In central Nara, look for this small tempura restaurant on

Furusato , 10 Higashimuki-dori. This unpretentious restaurant serving a range of

Hiraso , 30-1 Imanikado-cho. Hiraso specializes in persimmon-wrapped sushi, though
you'll also find all sorts of other tasty delicacies on the menu. Sushi sets start at
¥750, with more varied meals from around ¥2400, including cha-ga-yu . Tues-Sun
11am-9pm.

Sanshu , Isui-en. Tororo won't be everyone's cup of tea, but this is an attractive
place to find out, located in an old wooden house overlooking the secluded, Meiji-era
Isui-en garden. There are just two meals on the menu: plain mugi tororo (¥1200) or
unagi tororo laced with eels (¥2500). Daily except Tues 11.30am-1.30pm.
